Helping Hands Daycare was founded in 1989 in "Ajax" Ontario by Nancy Eickmeier,R.E.C.E. Nancy ran a small centre in Ajax with a capacity of 45 children. In 1990, the first Pickering location was built in the Amberlea area. For the next 11 years, the centre continued to grow and expanded from 39 children to 66. Needing more room, a new centre was built on Kingston Rd @ Whites Rd in 2001 that could accommodate 104 children. In 2003, we grew again, opening a centre in Brooklin with a capacity of 103 Children.
We opened our second Pickering site in 2005 (Rougemount & Kingston Rd) that has a capacity of 112. Another opened in Aug 2008 in Ajax by the lake (Ashbury & Audley). This beautiful site sits lakeside, in a community where many families can walk their children to the centre every day and park their strollers under our spacious porch. This playground is unique from our others, as it has the feel of one's backyard, grass and trees along with a covered porch area. In Feb 2010 we opened our Courtice location, a beautiful centre with a small town, country feel. In Sept 2010, we also opened our Westney site, across from the Go, this being our largest centre to date. Our newest centre, is Whitby (Thickson & Taunton) i This beautiful site is a bustling beehive of activities and fun :) As in all our other centres, this site provides care for children aged infants through schoolage. Subsidy is also able at all our centres for those who qualify.
We are proud to offer a new program at all of our daycares called HiMama. HiMama allows staff and parents to communicate through the HiMama app. Staff are able to send pictures, dailiy activites and daily reports directly to parent's/grandparents email.
Helping Hands also offers Story time with Mingo and Yippe Kids Yoga at many of our centres. Dance classes are also available at our Rougemount site.
It is our goal to provide challenging experiences appropriate to the developmental needs of each child. In addition to providing stimulating experiences for children, we also believe that learning can be fun. Through positive reinforcement, encouragement and a warm and loving environment, our qualified staff encourages the children to develop self-esteem, pride, respect and an understanding of themselves and others. Our centres work in conjunction with area high schools and colleges by allowing students to participate in our program while obtaining credits through cooperative education. We also sponsor the Early Childhood Education program through local Colleges that allow assistants to continue to work in the field while obtaining their RECE diploma.
My mother always told me "Be whatever you want to be, but be the best that you can possibly be". I have never forgotten that and always strive to raise the bar..... From a very young age, I always knew that my life would involve the care of children. Being an only child and being raised by a single mother, I had unconditional love, but was enchanted with larger families with many siblings.
My first job was in a daycare centre as a young teen and that was it, my career had begun. After College and obtaining my ECE diploma, I went to work in a daycare centre in the City of Toronto and quickly became Supervisor of a school based centre. After the birth of my two children, I began a home based daycare that quickly grew to the point where I knew I needed to expand. In 1989, I purchased an existing centre in Ajax, which was the beginning of Helping Hands Daycare. Since then, we have expanded to 7 centres over the past 28 years, with our newest centre opening in June 2011 in Whitby. When I am asked what my secret is, I tell them "There is no secret. Provide a clean, bright spacious facility where children and parents can feel safe and loved, hire staff that have a genuine love for their job and the children in their care." My staff are an amazing group of individuals who bring years of experience to work with them every day. Friendships are formed, memories are made, we laugh, sometimes cry and marvel at each and every child in our care and how they learn and grow, reaching new milestones. I am excited to say that we have many generational children enrolled.....their mommy's and daddy's attended Helping Hands when they were little, very cool. We also have staff who attended our centres years ago and came back to us as daycare teachers, so wonderful. Please drop by one of our locations for a tour and meet the BEST staff EVER.
